Great movie!

 

I have to confess, I wasn’t too excited about watching the new film Amazing Grace when I first saw the previews, but I did sit down and watch it last night.

What a great movie!

For those who don’t know the story (I didn’t), Amazing Grace follows William Wilberforce as he attempts to stop the slave trade in 18th century Great Britain. His pastor is John Newton, author of the song “Amazing Grace”. Wilberforce is an accomplished singer, a dynamic speaker in the House of Commons and there’s quite a few scenes with some really funny looking hairpieces, so it’s worth your time.

The acting is wonderful – and to all you BBC/A&E fans out there, you’ll probably see some familiar faces. The storyline, while a little hard to follow in some scenes, is entertaining and stays away from the typical trip-ups a biographical movie can fall over. Ioan Gruffudd did a remarkable job as Wilberforce. Also, kudos to Hollywood, they didn’t gloss over the Christian faith in any of the main characters.

Plus, the DVD has a music video for Chris Tomlin’s “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” song, which has won my vote for my favorite version of the classic hymn.

Here’s what it made me think about: How my faith affects my everyday life, how much our society changed based on the work of one man, and how grateful I am that jeans are now acceptable attire for women. 🙂
